Liberty Photo Art - Original Cinema Poster Condition Grading

  • Welcome to Liberty Photo Art's original cinema poster condition grading page, please read on below :

  • In our opinion (Liberty Photo Art) the grading of movie posters / memorabilia can't ever be an exact science because one potential buyers individual expectations and views to the next will and can differ vastly depending on what purpose and experiences they have had in purchasing movie poster / memorabilia before, it is for that reason we don't want to make it unnecessarily over complicated with "so" many different grades of condition because essentially "our word" is still only a honest opinion from our own personal experiences of handling thousands upon thousands of posters, hence we start our grading at "Excellent" which will be the equivilant to most companies "NEAR MINT" or "MINT". (Although in our opinion the "MINT" grade should never exist anyway)

  • We do realise that there is an element of subjectivity in grading movie posters and memorabilia but we feel that it is still important to have a grading system in place for our movie posters / memorabilia even if it doesn't follow in line with many of the larger film / memorabilia companies but we will always endeavour to make sure that for each individual poster that we give the best possible information through photographic evidence and a detailed description for the potential purchaser.

  • In addition to a worded explanation of the condition for each movie poster / memorabilia, which we do inspect / look at each poster / piece of memorabilia carefully, we also take our own ("NOT" stock images) relevant high resolution photographs including a main image which we make sure has all of the edges or the whole poster in view ("NOT" cropped) which we feel is incredibly important because there's nothing worse than getting a poster which arrives with unexpected crumpled edges, multiple edge nicks and tears when ultimately promised otherwise. We also add close-up images of anything we think is relevant for the potential purchaser such as edge / corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, very / small edge nick/s, tears, corner losses, tape addition, foxing/spots/stains, any small holes / breaches or separation in the middle / central folds, writing / marks on the front / back of the poster etc. (We have also added the company name across the main image of each poster / memorabilia to protect the purchaser)

  • We also feel it is important to mention that whilst our whole cinema collection doesn't solely comprise of older/vintage/ or extremely large movie posters, a good proportion of the original posters/memorabilia in our collection are now over 40 years old and we would like any visitors of this site or persons thinking/intending on purchasing from our online movie shop to realise/take on board that a good proportion of posters/memorabilia in our collection or up for sale on our online cinema shop have been displayed at a cinema and are also unrestored (unless otherwise stated), so they will have some defects/flaws however small that may be. We feel that with the combination of high resolution photos and a description of the condition of all/each poster, piece of memorabilia that we cover most bases in this respect but we feel it is also important to explain that essentially virtually (Not every) all older/vintage poster/s/ memorabilia are not going to be absolutely perfect/immaculate/mint.

Liberty Photo Art - Original Cinema Poster Condition Grading

PLEASE NOTE: The grading system below is still only a guide and we recommend for each individual poster / memorabilia too look closely at our accompanying images and / or contact us directly by email or the contact form HERE if you are unsure about any specific condition details.

Excellent: Only "ROLLED" film posters will be considered for this rating/grade. Very few of our posters/memorabilia will meet this grade but if they do there is or will be very little in terms of marks/wear etc. If we have listed a poster at this grade we really believe that you would struggle to find that particular poster again in equal or any better condition.

VERY GOOD: This is the first and top grade for any of our "FOLDED" posters. A poster with very little edge/corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, there maybe some very mild handling/age/error associated marks/dinks/creases/wrinkling to or upon the paper surface. (For posters from the 1980s and pre 80s we will give a little more latitude due to the age and/or whether the poster is folded for example etc.)

GOOD to VERY GOOD: A poster with generally only some mild edge/corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, there maybe a couple of really minor edge nick(s) up to a "cm" into the poster, mild foxing/discolouration of the paper surface in places on older posters, there may "possibly" be a couple of very small fold line holes/breaches/separations in the middle/central folds where the vertical fold lines meet the horizontal fold lines but these breaches are small so they may not be picked up even on the close-up images we have provided, pinholes to corners on older posters which aren't too intrustive to the aesthetics, there maybe some writing in pen/biro on the back of an older poster or even in felt pen for example and there may also be some handling/age/error associated marks/dinkscreases/wrinkling to or upon the poster surface. (For posters from the 1980s and pre 80s we will give a little more latitude due to the age and/or whether they are folded etc.)

GOOD: A poster which may have some edge/corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, edge nick(s)/tear(s) which "could" be up to or extend an "inch" into the poster, foxing/discolouration of the paper surface on older posters, fold line holes/breaches/separations in the middle/central folds where the vertical fold lines meet the horizontal fold lines, some of these will be larger breaches than the previous condition and for example on larger posters such as "French Grande" or "Italian 2 Fogli" could be up to "half an inch" in size, there may possibly be multiple pinholes to the same corner/s or along the verticals/sides, writing in pen or felt pen on the back of the poster which shows through more prominently and also more intrusive or a larger quantity of writing than the previous condition grade, mild residue/staining from tape removal or other on older posters and handling/age associated marks/dinks/creases/wrinkling to or upon the poster surface. (For posters from the 1980s and pre 80s we will give a little more latitude due to the age and/or whether they are folded etc.)

REASONABLE to GOOD: A poster which will have edge/corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, the poster may have multiple edge nick(s)/tear(s) which "may" possibly extend up to a couple of inches into the poster, foxing/discolouration of the paper surface, multiple pinholes, fold line holes/breaches/separations in the middle/central folds where the vertical fold lines meet the horizontal fold lines and also from the edges extending into the poster along a fold line including possible stresses/breaches along the fold lines but this will be only on older or larger poster sizes, maybe some minor trimming of the poster, residue/staining left behind from tape removal or other, minor paper loss to corners or mild print loss on or within the design and handling/age associated marks/dinks/creases/wrinkling to or upon the poster surface (For posters from the 1980s and pre 80s we will give a little more latitude due to the age and/or whether they are folded etc.)

REASONABLE: A poster which will have edge/corner wear, creasing, scuffs, marks, multiple edge nick(s)/tear(s) approximately up to a couple of inches into the poster, multiple pinholes, foxing/discolouration of the paper surface, possibly areas of moisture damage, paper loss to corners, print loss within the main design area, residue/staining left on the poster from tape removal and handling/age/error associated marks/dinks/creases/wrinkling to or upon the poster surface (For posters from the 1980s and pre 80s we will give a little more latitude due to the age and/or whether they are folded etc.)

POOR to REASONABLE & POOR: These posters will only be sold on our website in lots and they will obviously have multiple issues and we would only recommend for person/s wanting something different for example; for use in collage designs, a specific vintage design theme within the home or pub/bar for example and/or prop use etc.
