A brief history:
- Richmond is the third state capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States after the previous state capital's of Jamestown & Williamsburg in the American Colonial period.
- In 1779, the Virginia General Assembly decided to relocate the seat of Virginia's government from Williamsburg to Richmond
- During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital for the Confedorate States of America.
- Richmond has been an independent city since 1871.
