A brief history of The Mall / interest to accompany Liberty Photo Art's DC stock photography

• The Mall is officially a mile long boulevard between the United States Capitol Building and the Washington Monument and is the city's cultural heart.

• Pierre Charles L'Enfant's original plan for the new city & to be the new capital of the United States was for the "Mall" to be a grand boulevard lined with diplomatic residences of elegant, Parisian architecture. His dream was never realised but it influenced other designers & architects to construct what it is today, a mile long green boulevard lined with trees, museums, art galleries, monuments & memorials including the National Museum of Natural History, National Gallery of Art, National Air & Space Museum (all part of the Smithsonian Institution) & the Washington Monument.

• The United States Capitol Building marks the most eastern point on the "Mall" and the Washington Monument marks the "official" most western point of the "Mall".
