A brief history;
- Pierre Charles L'Enfant's original plan for the new city & to be the new capital of the United States was for the "Mall" to be a grand boulevard lined with diplomatic residences of elegant,
Parisian architecture. His dream was never realised but it influenced other designers & architects to construct what it is today, a mile long green boulevard lined with trees, museums, art
galleries, monuments & memorials including the National Museum of Natural History, National Gallery of Art, National Air & Space Museum (all part of the Smithsonian Institution) & the
Washington Monument.
Museums & galleries to look out for on the "Mall" include the;
- Hirshhorn Museum, Plaza & Sculpture Garden
- Arts & Industries Buidling
- National Museum of National History
- National Air & Space Museum
- Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
- National Museum of African Art
- National Museum of American History
The United States Capitol Building marks the most eastern point on the "Mall" and the Washington Monument marks the "official" most western point of the "Mall".
